Subject:Taiwan Says NO to Chinese Invasion Threat!

Statement re 'Anti-Chinese invasion Movement' Rally 26th March, 2005

European-Taiwanese Association for Peace& Anti-Invasion

In response to the enactment of the so-called 'Anti-secession Law' by the Chinese government, which underlines its persistent military threat against Taiwan, Taiwanese students and residents in the United Kingdom, together with the Taiwanese in the rest of Europe, are standing up to China by saying 'NO!' We would like to call upon European people who stand for peace, freedom and democracy to show your support and insist on the European Union's retaining the arms embargo on China.

1. Taiwan is a free and democratic country. Whether or not it wants to unite with China is a decision for its 23 million people. The Taiwanese people are willing to share their experience of democratization with China and promote human rights and mutual benefits. However, the belligerent Chinese government is risking the peaceful and prosperous future of the peoples of both Taiwan and China. Taiwanese people will not tolerate the threat to their achievements in the areas of democracy and development.

2. Taiwan (ROC) is an independent state. The recent passage of China's so-called 'Anti-secession Law' provides a legal ground for the Chinese government to use military force to end Taiwanese independence. This statute highlights the fact that China has no jurisdiction over Taiwan; on the other hand, it emphasizes China's intention to invade Taiwan should 'peaceful means' to overturn Taiwanese independence fail. This is not acceptable to the people of Taiwan and international society.

3. China has been escalating its military expenditure by double figures throughout recent years. In 2005, it increased its defense budget by 12%. This has been done at the expense of Chinese domestic social welfare. Its military arsenal, including the seven hundred missiles aimed at Taiwan and the recent appearance of a Chinese submarine in Japanese territorial waters, has raised war anxiety not only in Taiwan and Asia, but also in the rest of the world. We would like to warn the European Union: Do not become an accomplice to Chinese military action by lifting the arms embargo.

We want peace. We condemn violence. We have the right to say 'NO' to China.

Subject:Film Appreciation Day, organised by TWAUK.

Dear Friends,

I hope that this message finds you well.

Firstly we would like to thank you all for a thoroughly enjoyable evening at the TWAUK Dinner on 6th March. I'm sure that you will all agree that much fun was had singing, drinking and eating that evening!

TWAUK is planning to hold a Film Appreciation Day between 2pm and 5:30pm on 3rd April at the Golders Green Trinity Church. The film we are showing is called 'Infernal Affairs' and was first shown in South East Asia in 2002.

Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, Infernal Affairs is a tense thriller featuring Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Tony Leung. The film follows the parallel lives of Ming (Lau), a cop who secretly reports to ruthless Triad crime boss Sam (Eric Tsang); and Yan (Leung), an undercover police officer who poses as a Triad member in Sam's gang. For Yan, the years of living in the criminal underworld have taken their toll, and he longs to return to regular police duty. However, the only person who knows Yan's true identity is his mentor Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong), also the unsuspecting superior of Ming. When Wong's officers come face to face with Sam's gang, both leaders realize there are moles in their midst. Soon Yan and Ming must track each other down, leading to an inevitable confrontation.

Unlike many contemporary Hong Kong films, Infernal Affairs steers clear of over-the-top action in favor of a more stylized and subdued story that builds on emotional and psychological tension. Leung is riveting as the undercover cop who desperately wants a normal life, while Lau instills his corrupt character with confidence and charm that mask his deep inner conflict. These two stellar turns are ably supported by veteran actors Wong and Tsang, along with Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen. A huge blockbluster in Asia, Infernal Affairs is a landmark of Hong Kong cinema that deserves the same status abroad.

After the film, we will be holding a group discussion about the main themes of the movie, we welcome everyone to join us. There will be no fee for existing members and a 1 pound entrance fee for non-members. Payment will be taken at the door.

We hope to see you all there!

Many Thanks,
TWAUK

We would like to invite every one of the listed associations' members to come along with all their family and friends to help celebrate the glorious day. According to our tradition, the events that we hold are totally independent from government and outside funding. It would be nicer of you to bring not only your guests/ family but also one main course dish of your choice. This dish/ dishes should be able to serve at least the amount of people that you'd bring with you. Please bring food that is going to be enjoyed by all people but not snacks such as biscuits, drinks or fruit.

Come and let everyone hear your magnificent singing voice, the side-splitting jokes that you have to offer, and sample your home cooking. Please ensure that you contact your appropriate association chairperson listed below as soon as possible for the registration.

Subject:The Invitation of the Norwich tour, from TWAUK and TAIUK!

      The Invitation of the scheduled [Norwich tour]
      from TWAUK (the Taiwanese Women's Association
      in the United Kingdom) and TAIUK (the Taiwanese
      Association in the United Kingdom)
   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Members and fellow Taiwanese:
 Re:                        Invitation
        From Taiwanese Association & Taiwanese Women's Association
           .:::::: Norfolk historical tour ::::::.
 ________________________________________________________
"These are the clauses which the barons seek and the king concedes --- John, by the grace of God, King of England, Lord of Ireland, Duke of Normandy and Aquitaine, and Count of Anjou, to the archbishops, bishops, abbots, earls, barons, justiciars, foresters, sheriffs, stewards, servants, and to all his bailiffs and liege subjects, greetings ---."
by
Royal Clerk, 1215
The Magna Carta marks an epoch in English history. Taiwanese Association in the United Kingdom (TAIUK) and Taiwanese Women's Association in the United Kingdom (TWAUK) chose to unveil the English historical context in this exciting trip to Bury St. Edmund and Sandringham House.
Bury St Edmund is a town with great significance in English history. Rebellious baronage assembled to "confer secretly" in this small town to pledge mutual support for a charter granted more than a century before by King Henry I. The focus of the scene - St. Edmunds Abby ranks among two other prominent churches - Canterbury and Walsingham, was Greek architecture. The relic of the church reminds pilgrims the spirit of ancient nobles who fought for their rights.
The most famous house in this trip is undoubtedly Sandringham, bought in 1862 for the future Edward VII, and which now has public access to the house, gardens, museum and park. The personal nature of the public rooms provides a charming insight into the off-duty life of the royal family, and at any time of the year the museum, country park and gardens are delightful.
The Holiday Inn includes amenities such as sauna, fitness club, swimming pool, so please remember to bring your swim suit! The cost of this trip includes coach, tickets to tourist attractions, and accommodation (Please note: NO single room will be offered). The fee is GBP 70 for members (of TSAUK, TWAUK or TAIUK) and GBP 75 for non-members. Free for children aged under three who share same bed with adults.
Please contact our group organiser Ms. Meei-yuan Chung or Mrs. Marcia Lai as soon as possible via telephone for registration. Please let us know how many people you'd bring with you together with your preferred meal choice. Alternatively, You might use the application form mail located as follows:
UK Taiwanese Womens' Association Monthly Activity: Number Three!
Re: Invitation
Dear Members:
Greetings. First of all we would like to thank you all for attending The Association's Second workshop on clothes alteration and cushion making. On this occasion, under the kind guidance of Mrs Lai, all attendees poured all efforts into piping, hemming and fitting in zips whilst soaking in the atmosphere and chatting happily away. We hear that a few of you have already completed your projects! Those of you who are still endeavouring, don't give up! The association is eagerly awaiting the completed products for our exhibition.
The third monthly meeting will be a guided tour of the British Museum. Mrs. Christina Own will take us on a comprehensive tour of the museum. The event will be held on Saturday 13th April, starting at 1:00 to 2:30pm at 'Gerrard's Corner Restaurant', (Hao-Nian-Hua Can-Ting, On Gerrard Street in Chinatown). We will kick off with a group dim-sum which Mrs. Own has kindly organized. Meal prices vary between 6 pounds and 8 pounds. The guided tour of the museum will take place later in the afternoon between 3:00 and 5:30pm.
Please reply to our group organizer Ms Meei-yuan or Mei-hua as soon as possible via telephone. Please let us know how many people you'd bring with you together with your preferred meal choice. Alternatively, You might use the application form mail located as follows:
    http://www.twauk.org/contact
On a different note, Mrs Lai returned to Taiwan on 26th March, we thank her for all her contribution during her time here, wishing her good health and best wishes for the future.
Finally, we would like to send our regards to all our members throughout the UK.
Taiwanese Womens' Association in the UK.
